Hide Web Service Documentation- Increase web service security

I got few recommendations to increase web service security. One recommendation was to hide Web Service Documentation. Because WSDL provides all the information about the Web service. Anyone can consume this WSDL and generate a proxy to talk to the Web service. Now say that you are working on a secure Web service and you would like to hide all the information about the Web service. It is only available to some known clients, which are already aware of the WSDL/schema. You can instruct the ASP.NET runtime not to generate any documentation for the Web service by updating the web.config like this:

As soon as you update the web.config, you can neither access the HTML documentation page nor the WSDL for the Web service. Tested on .NET web services.

The 2007 Rugby World Cup will be the sixth Rugby World Cup, for the quadrennial world championship. It will be hosted by France from September 7 to October 20 of 2007. France won the right to host the event in 2003, beating a bid from England.
Over 90 nations participated in the regional qualifying competitions that started in 2004. The eight quarter-finalists from the 2003 event automatically qualified, twelve further nations have qualified. Portugal is the only debutant nation at the 2007 World Cup.
This World Cup will have 20 nations contesting 48 matches over 44 days. Forty-two matches will be spread between ten French cities, with four matches to be held in Cardiff, Wales and two matches in Edinburgh, Scotland. ( from wikipedia).

Caltex League Started

Caltex rugby league, the biggest rugby tournament in Sri Lanka was started last week . As rugby player and a rugby fan, that is my favourite Sport league held in Sri Lanka.
More than 10 leading rugby teams are participating for this league and I am a fan of Kandy team, whom are the defending champions of this league. Rugby would be the second popular sport in Sri Lanka as I guess.

University of Moratuwa rugby team was participated division 3 games of the same league.I was a member of this team since 2000.

The Sri Lanka national rugby union team represents Sri Lanka in international rugby union competitions. Sri Lanka have yet to make their debut at the Rugby World Cup, though they made it to Round 2 of the Asian qualifying competition for the 2007 Rugby World Cup in France. The Sri Lanka rugby team performed above expectations during the qualifying campaign for the world cup, and saw its world ranking improve from 68th place to 43rd place, and its Asian ranking improve to fifth place.

Last Monday ( 07/05/2007) we visited Thames Buddhist Vihara, in Memorial Hall, Dulverton Road, Selsdon, Surrey, CR2 8PJ, UK .
This is the first time we visited a Sri Lankan Buddhist temple in the UK.
And it is nearly 30 miles from our place. There were 3 Sri Lankan monks and they gave us chanting strings.

As Wikipedia says ..SQL injection is a technique that exploits a security vulnerability occurring in the database layer of an application. The vulnerability is present when user input is either incorrectly filtered for string literal escape characters embedded in SQL statements or user input is not strongly typed and thereby unexpectedly executed. It is in fact an instance of a more general class of vulnerabilities that can occur whenever one programming or scripting language is embedded inside another.
This really good thing to learn .To prevents this need to understand better.
Cross-Site Scripting and SQL Injection are very important when we develop web applications or web service.
But if you are good programmer and if you follow best practices always, you don’t worry about this, but if not this is very dangerous.
If you are web application developer check whether is your application is safe from SQL injection and Cross-Site Scripting.

Biztalk project – Store configuration

While I was developing my biztalk project , one question came up was “ How and where can I store Biztalk project configuration. After short research on Google I found few methods, which I can use for.
First and easy method if keep all necessary information on Biztalk server (BTSNTSvc.exe) configuration file.
Other good method is to keep configuration data on SSO data base using SSO API.
For my project I used first and easy method since I haven’t got any critical data to put on the configuration file.
I found nice article from Jon Flanders on his blog.
I have nice samples and pictures regarding this but unfortunately i cannot publish those because i haven't got installed Biztalk in to my home laptop and i cannot access my blog from my office. :-(

Scotland journey

I went to Scotland last Friday (30/03/07) for 2 day journey with Malka and other 2 friends (Thushara and Vadiva )by car.
We started our trip Friday 10pm and arrived to Edinburgh the capital of Scotland Saturday morning. It was nearly 430 miles journey.
Saturday ( 31/03/07) we visited lot of Scotland attractions including Scotland castle , queens residence .
Saturday night we went to Aberdeen (towards north) and stay one of our friends place.
We visited few castles in Aberdeen too.
Chamal came to meet us and gave very grand lunch for us. All the foods made by him self.
Finally we backed safely home Monday morning.

Finally I found the way, here it is
Since .NETCF support has System.XML, write your own configuration class in order to read settings form the XML file. This is one way how to give XML file path in PPC application

Consuming web service in .NETCF

.NET web service can be used in .NETCF 1.0 and 2.0 but cannot be getting the full functionality that can get using .Net framework.
Web service cab be just invoke but cannot keep and maintain session as we can do in .NET framework, since the limitation of the .NET CF API (lack of class in the .NET CF)
By doing several researches I gave up idea of marinating session in the web service which consume from the .NET CF.
I found nice article, which describe how to keep web service session from .NET framework (Not CF).

Same thing happened for WSE 2.0. I did several researches on WSE 2.0 to get the security of the web service, but finally had to give up that idea when conceder .NET CF, due to the limitation on API.

Cryptography
And also same thing happened for the Encryption. In the .NET framework there are rich set of class which can be used for encryption but in CF only Cryptography.X509Certificates is available. So finally I have two options either use Pocket PC API encryption methods or create my own encryption method,byt second one is better than first.

Tabbing is based on z-order, the order in which the controls are added to the Controls collection. The first focusable control in an application is the form itself.Tabbing in Pocket PC application developed using VB.NET 1.1 is now same as windows application.

Example:
If you add 4 Textbox in to form from TextBox1 to TextBox4 respectively
As shown picture below, tab order automatically set (If you use TAB key)

In code level, generated code by VS 2003 VB.NET IDE for above case shown below;(Controls added TextBox1 to TextBox4 but in code level it adds from 4-1 respectively)

Conclusion

CAUSE
This problem occurs because Windows XP with SP2 does not allow the Virtual PC/Windows CE Emulator driver (VPCAppSv.sys) to load when hardware-based DEP is enabled. This is part of the Windows XP SP2 Driver Protection feature.Note Physical Address Extension (PAE) mode must be enabled for DEP to work. Windows XP automatically enables PAE mode to support hardware-based DEP. You do not have to make an entry in the Boot.ini file to enable PAE mode.

RESOLUTION
Important These steps may increase your security risk. These steps may also make your computer or your network more vulnerable to attack by malicious users or by malicious software such as viruses. We recommend the process that this article describes to enable programs to operate as they are designed to, or to implement specific program capabilities. Before you make these changes, we recommend that you evaluate the risks that are associated with implementing this process in your particular environment. If you choose to implement this process, take any appropriate additional steps to help protect your system. We recommend that you use this process only if you really require this process.To resolve this problem and to run Window CE 4.x Emulator, disable hardware-based DEP on your computer that is running Windows XP SP2. Development in UK

Since March 2006, I have been working Company called CHL in fleets (Hampshire county- UK), a financial paper less company. They use Software for each and every business work. They have their own IT development team to develop, maintain and support to their software.
I am the only Asian guy work with them in their development team.
We are developing standalone and online SW using Microsoft technologies.
Few days back I was mainly focused on developing few but quirt large SPs run on SQL server 2000. This was good experience for me since I did not get good chance to work with SP in my last projects.

Refactor! for Visual Basic 2005

According to Martin Fowler, in his excellent book, Refactoring:
"Refactoring is the process of changing a software system in such a way that it does not alter the external behavior of the code yet improves its internal structure. It is a disciplined way to clean up code that minimizes the chances of introducing bugs. In essence, when you refactor you are improving the design of the code after it has been written."

Web Application Framework for .NET (DNN)

DotNetNuke is a web application framework for .NET. It is open source and has built on a Microsoft ASP.NET (VB.NET) platform.
I got to know about this from one interviewer, he asked me whether you know DNN.
That was the first time I hard about that word. That interview was not succeed even thought they were really happy with my knowledge (That is a long story) but I could learn DNN from the interviewer.
DNN support for .NET 1.1 and .NET 2.0 as well and it work fine with IIS and Cassini web server.
It is really nice and easy to learn and use.

Daffodil Flower

As Dayan Witharana said in his song, daffodil is a beautiful flower appeared in the spring season. In this season daffodil can be seen every where. Really beautiful, Have different colours. Nice experience. We picked some from the university. This picture is taken by my self from in side our flat. Spring is nice time, nice climate.

My first experience on Snow

This was my first experience on Snow I have ever had. We were hoped heavy snow as announced by the weather forecast, but we were not that much lucky. We were played on snow around two hours with other local and international students.
It was really good experience.
But Finally I would say there is not other good place like Sri Lanka.
